PHULKARI : The Geographical Indication Of Punjab

Phulkari is a traditional embroidery art form originating from Punjab, India and Pakistan. The word “Phulkari” is derived from the Punjabi words “phul” (flower) and “kari” (work), which together mean “flower work” or “flower craft”. This embroidery style typically features vibrant colors and intricate patterns, often depicting floral motifs stitched with floss silk threads on coarse cotton fabric. Phulkari embroidery holds cultural significance as it is traditionally worn by women during special occasions such as weddings and festivals, symbolizing beauty, auspiciousness, and tradition in Punjabi culture. It is more than just an item of clothing, it is a spirit filled with social, cultural and ritualistic traditions.
